February 2011 Newsletter

You have all received an invitation to the preview lecture by Clayton Kirking (president of FOMA from 1986 - 88) highlighting the upcoming Phoenix Art Museum exhibit “Mexican Modernism” (partially funded by FOMA).  He will speak on Sunday, January 30, at the Franciscan Renewal Center (5802 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale) at 2 pm.   His presentation will cover the show itself, current trends in Mexican art, and FOMA’s place in Mexican art and culture.   Mr. Kirking is very familiar with this collection and will be able to give us valuable information and answer questions.  This exciting lecture is another free event open to FOMA members and their guests.   There will be a reception afterwards at the Center.   Also consider joining Mr. Kirking and other FOMA members at the Mexican Buffet following the lecture at Mountain Shadows Golf Club (5517 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale).  For Mexican Buffet reservations, call Donna Reining at 602-997-9835 no later than January 25.

In 1964, the first major exhibition of contemporary Mexican art in the United States was presented as a joint venture between the newly incorporated Friends of Mexican Art and the Phoenix Art Museum.  This exhibit was seen by more than 25,000 people and was the beginning of close relationship between the Phoenix Art Museum and FOMA.  This relationship continues with “Mexican Modernism”,  a collection of 80 paintings created by 41 of Mexico’s  leading artists working between 1910 and 1950.  The show will run from July 1 through September 26, 2011.  We hope that all FOMA members will attend this exhibit - support of this show continues and upholds the mission of our organization.

Those of us who visited Dr. Jorge Eagar’s Nacimiento were treated to quite an experience.  His home is beautiful - Mexican art everywhere - and the Nacimiento displays over 1200 figurines representing over 55 years of collecting.  It was certainly an excellent way to celebrate the holiday season.  And FOMA benefited from a percentage of the donations.  Thanks again, Dr. Eagar!

We have new members:  Paul H. and Grace S. Schoonover  P.O. Box 1643 Cave Creek, AZ 85327 480-488-3981   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Make them feel welcome to the FOMA family!

We are looking forward to a very successful home tour again this year to be held Sunday, February 27, from 10 am to 4 pm.  “Casitas Encantadas” promises to be one of the best yet,  featuring four homes with outstanding art collections. Of course, the Mexican Mercado always fascinates and entices.  We really need volunteers, so please call Sally Hutchison at 602-840-8907 to let her know how you would like to help.  Lots of help is needed.  Call Sally soon!

The FOMA Book Club will meet at the home of Micaela and Hugo Rangel on Tuesday February 15 at 1:00 pm.  The book to be discussed is Swift as Desire by Laura Esquivel (author of Like Water for Chocolate).  The Rangels always provide tasty refreshments prepared by Micaela, so this meeting is not to be missed!

The number for the new FOMA phone was printed incorrectly in last month’s Newsletter.  The correct number is:  602-334-6585.   Sorry for any inconvenience.
